Telecommuting and the Changing Office
Telecommuting is on the rise. Employees, especially millennials, want more flexibility in their work environment – and employers are better prepared to offer that flexibility, with help from mobile tools and the internet.
This, of course, is creating a shift in office space. In many situations, the concept of the “static” workstation is going away. According to Kate Lister, founder of the Telework Research Network, landlords and office building owners should be prepared to connect with architects and designers that know how to re-purpose space.
Another issue with telecommuting involves the employees left behind. Recent research showed that employees who remain in the office can feel lonely and disconnected. The research also showed that lack of face time among employees could lead to distrust.
