Target to Close Two Seattle Stores Amid Retail Crime, Safety Concerns

Two Seattle Target stores are part of the recently announced move by the big box store to close nine stores in major cities across four states, blaming theft and organized retail crime for creating an unsafe and unsustainable business environment. In a company statement, Target said, “Despite our efforts, unfortunately, we continue to face fundamental challenges to operating these stores safely and successfully.”

The two stores in the Seattle market at 4535 University Way NE  and 1448 NW Market Street will shut down effective October 21. Target is also closing three locations in the Portland area. Other closures include three in the Bay Area and one in New York City.

According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, the move will impact 90 employees, per a filing with the Washington State Employment Security Department. Employees from both stores can pursue transfer opportunities or leave the retailer with severance pay through the end of the year, reported the outlet.
