Historic Sugar Land Char House to be centerpiece for a mixed use development

Sugar Land’s Historic Char House to be Part of New Mixed-Use Project

At one time, Sugar Land was home to a large sugar plantation and the Imperial Sugar Company building, the Char House, was emblematic of that era. It’s still standing and a Houston developer wants to develop a walkable, mixed-use project comprised of retail, entertainment, food and beverage, multi-family and single-family residential, commercial office space, and more at the historic location.

PUMA, a Houston-based development firm specializing in creating, mixed-use communities, has requested support from the city of Sugar Land toward preservation of the Char House and eventual development of the remainder of the Imperial Historic District. The town will be considering financial support of the PUMA project as it progresses.

City Manager Michael W. Goodrum has more, “Projects like this are expensive and complex and will need financial support from the city and other available financial tools to be feasible…the city must consider investing in our future.”
