State Puts 112K-SF Historic G.J. Sutton Complex Up for Sale

Legislation passed by the state of Texas paves the way for the sale of the G.J. Sutton complex at 321 Center St. on San Antonio’s east side. The state would like to see the vacant, 112,000-square-foot property repurposed.

The next stage will be issuance of a request for proposals, then collecting responses and reviewing bids, which could take between six months and a year, or more. State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, who represents San Antonio and introduced the bill authorizing the sale, told the Rivard Report that she hopes it will go to a buyer willing to work with the community on redevelopment.

The complex was named for Garlington Jerome Sutton, the first black official from San Antonio elected to the Texas Legislature. Once home to San Antonio Machine and Supply Co., the state acquired the complex in 1975, using it as office space until vacating the site in 2013, due to safety issues.
