State Mulls More Medical Cannabis Dispensaries

Texas regulators are considering an increase in the number of businesses allowed to dispense a form of non-psychoactive medical cannabis. As of now, there are only three dispensaries in the state, but the Texas Department of Public Safety announced plans to accept applications for new licenses from Oct. 1, 2019 through Nov. 1, 2019.

Under the state’s Compassionate Use Act, only patients suffering from intractable epilepsy were eligible for medical cannabis from the state’s three dispensaries. However, state lawmakers during this year’s legislative session added more ailments to the list of qualifying conditions, including multiple sclerosis, terminal cancer and autism. However, the cannabis that is available must contain no more than 0.5% THC.

Still, experts believe more companies will apply for the new dispensing licenses, even in a constrained market. The thought is that companies want to plant their flag in the market, should cannabis restrictions loosen.
