State Moves Ahead on Thompson Center Sale with RFP
The state’s Department of Central Management Services said Tuesday that it would issue a request for proposals this week for “an array of technical and project management expertise” for the sale of the James R. Thompson Center in the Loop. With an Oct. 4 deadline for responses, the RFP seeks guidance on disposing of the Helmut Jahn-designed office property at the best value to the State of Illinois.
“The Thompson Center is an inefficient work environment for the current demands of state business,” said Gov. JB Pritzker. “We are moving forward with the process of selling the facility and using the proceeds to help stabilize the pension system.”
Opened in 1985, the 17-story Thompson Center encompasses approximately 1.2 million square feet. Because of prolonged deferred maintenance and delayed capital projects, the cost of bringing the building to a state of good repair has been estimated at more than $300 million.
