State Comptroller: Arts & Recreation NYC’s Hardest-Hit Industry

New York City’s arts, entertainment and recreation industry took the biggest hit of any employment sector in the city as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said Wednesday. The industry lost 66% of its jobs to government-mandated shutdowns and has yet to recover them, he added.

DiNapoli urged the state and city to work in coordination to provide establishments with clear guidance for venues to reopen and make use of outdoor space to expand audiences. He outlined key steps that federal, city and state officials should take to manage risks to the industry, including extending unemployment benefits commensurate with need and delivering healthcare supplies so that venues can reopen safely.

“The COVID-19 outbreak has had a profound and negative impact on the industry,” he said. “It has forced facilities to close, thrust thousands into unemployment and pushed businesses to the brink of collapse.”
