Starcity Plans World’s Largest ‘Co-Living’ MF in San Jose
San Francisco-based Starcity plans to open what it says will be the world’s largest “co-living” community in downtown San Jose. Bassett is a nearly 800-unit building planned for downtown San Jose, near Caltrain’s Diridon Station. The project is set to break ground early next year, and is expected to open in 2021.
Co-living is a dorm-like set-up, where residents rent a small private bedroom and share common spaces. Rents at Bassett will be targeted at 80% of median area income.
The development at 199 Bassett in San Jose, along with another 270-unit property at 475 Minna in San Francisco, are the startup’s first ground-up projects. Previously, it renovated existing buildings, including its first co-housing site, a conversion of a San Francisco Victorian house and garage into a six-unit shared living space in 2016.
Starcity plans another 600 units in San Francisco, and more than 400 in Los Angeles in the next year.
