Starbucks Plans to Start Reopening U.S. Stores Next Week
Starbucks outlined plans on Wednesday to start reopening “a significant number” of stores as soon as next week. The Seattle-based coffee giant says it will make the move “over the next days and weeks, when it is considered safe to do so, and in cooperation with local health authorities and local governments.”
CEO Kevin Johnson told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” the coffee chain plans to operate U.S. cafes and serve customers in a range of ways. He said Starbucks expects about 90% of its company-operated U.S. locations to be open by early June. Roughly half of Starbucks’ U.S. company-operated stores are closed, and those that remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic only offer drive-thru service.
Customers will be able to order and pay ahead of time using the Starbucks App, and pick up their order at the door or in the drive-thru. At select locations where social distancing can be implemented, stores will offer “grab and go,” so customers can place an order in the cafe and then take it to go.
