Spheres Workspace Opens at Amazon’s Urban Seattle HQ
Amazon opened The Spheres, the company’s newest buildings at its Seattle HQ. The distinct workplace offers no enclosed offices, conference spaces, or desks, though employees can meet in treehouses suspended under more than 40-foot trees or in sitting areas. The environment has walking paths alongside cascading waterfalls and more than 40,000 plants, making it more like a tropical rainforest in the clouds than an office.
The largest Sphere is more than 90 feet tall and 130 feet in diameter. All three Spheres share a single indoor environment. The exterior façade features a naturally occurring shape in nature called a “Catalan,” which is derived from the face of a pentagonal hexecontahedron Catalan solid. The Spheres’ façade contains 2,643 panes of glass that are ultra-clear and energy-efficient.
The Spheres will be open to the public, and will provide educational opportunities to the Seattle community.
