Sparse Attendance Pushes Navy Pier to Close Until Spring

One of Chicago’s signature tourist attractions, Navy Pier will implement a temporary pier-wide closure the day after Labor Day and running through spring 2021. The not-for-profit entity said the closure was an attempt to limit the financial impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on the organization and its on-site businesses.

“We are only seeing about 15 to 20% of the attendance that we would typically see this time of year, which is also typically our busiest time of the year,” Marilynn Gardner, pier president and CEO, told the Chicago Tribune. “We need to do this now to get to the other side of the pandemic.”

Closing as weather turns colder and visitorship typically decreases will help the Pier limit its losses in a year when it already projected falling $20 million short of anticipated revenues. It had reopened June 10 as city and state shutdown orders had begun to ease.
