Space Needle Launches $100M Renovation
Seattle’s 55-year-old Space Needle is set to undergo a $100-million renovation. The Century Project will update the iconic 605-foot tall structure’s physical systems, and elevate the visitor experience by dramatically enhancing views.
Privately funded, the project will heighten the Observation Deck experience with floor-to-ceiling glass on the interior and exterior, to further open up the uninhibited 360° views of the Puget Sound area. The restaurant level will be reimagined with a first-of-its-kind rotating glass floor unveiling new downward views of the structure.
Construction will start in September 2017, with the initial phase expected to wrap by June 2018. Most work will be done from an elevated work platform just below the restaurant level. That will allow the majority of the structure to remain open to the public during construction. The Space Needle was built in 1962 for the Century 21 World’s Fair.
