Southwest Research Institute Snags 260 Acres

San Antonio-headquartered Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), an independent, nonprofit applied research and development organization, acquired 260 acres near its current campus at 6220 Culebra Rd. The acreage was bought from heirs of rancher Marrs McLean, and will be used to develop future facilities.

The purchase consists of 180 acres at 103 Callahan Rd., and 80 acres south of SH 151 on San Antonio’s west side. The seller was a long-time supporter of the institute, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.

With the new acreage, the institute’s holdings total approximately 1,500 acres. The SwRI headquarters campus contains 2.3 million square feet of laboratories, test facilities, workshops and offices. The organization will maintain the agricultural land on the property until it’s ready to expand. There is no timeline for development, though the city of San Antonio approved SwRI’s application to rezone the property to general industrial.
