Southwest Airlines Will Expand Service to O’Hare, Houston Intercontinental

Southwest Airlines Co. plans to expand its service offerings in Chicago and Houston, with work underway to begin flights from O’Hare Airport alongside its existing service from Midway Airport on the city’s South Side. The airline has flown out of Midway since 1985, and currently employs 4,800 in Chicago.

In Houston, Southwest will add flights from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, complementing its operation at Houston Hobby. Intercontinental was one of three airports used by Southwest on its first day of service in 1971.

“Southwest owes decades of success to our employees and customers who have supported our business in Chicago and Houston,” said CEO Gary Kelly. He added that Monday’s announcement “furthers our commitment to both cities as we add service to share Southwest’s value and Hospitality with more leisure and business travelers.”
