SouthStar’s MPC Poised to Break Ground After COVID Pause

SouthStar Communities’ $250-million master-planned community near Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s South Side campus is set to break ground within the next month, the San Antonio Business Journal reported.

The 600-acre Vida development, including single-family, multifamily and townhome components, was set to launch last spring, but was paused due to the health and economic uncertainties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the development team and community partners continue to see a need for housing on San Antonio’s South Side, especially around the university.

“The idea has evolved, and we had a speed bump in the spring thanks to COVID, but we never stopped planning and working,” SouthStar president Thad Rutherford told the Business Journal. “Once it starts, these things generally don’t stop.”

Work on the project will start near Loop 410 and gradually move toward the university. Development is slated to occur throughout the next decade, with completion expected by 2032.
