South Brooklyn Marine Terminal Will See Revival

The de Blasio administration plans to reactivate the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal as a major shipping hub. The city has selected Red Hook Container Terminal and Industry City to operate what will be known as the Sustainable South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, bringing new industrial uses to the local waterfront.

SSBMT will reactivate 64.5 acres at the terminal for uses, including waste paper recycling and export, lumber and salt importing, container-on-barge operations and project cargo. Plans call for an on-site workforce development center, leveraging the Industry City Innovation Lab’s network of local partners.

“New York City’s working waterfront has long been a source of economic vitality, fueling industries and good-paying careers for over a century,” said James Patchett, president and CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. “Sustainable South Brooklyn Marine Terminal will build on that legacy to advance the future of the New York Harbor.”
