Solving Apple, Facebook Data Center Power Crunch
The arrival of tech companies to the Central Oregon region caused a power crunch for the community of Prineville, OR. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) is addressing the shortage, and expects to be able to deliver twice as much electricity in the coming years.
There’s plenty of power generated by utility and power agencies. The problem is getting it where it is needed. Power lines and electrical substations in the region simply can’t deliver it.
Recent tech arrivals, including Apple and Facebook, which have massive server farms in Prineville, produced a demand surge. And, without an increase in capacity to welcome others, including a mysterious newcomer only known as “Project Falcon,” plans could be derailed.
A pair of electrical substations will be upgraded, and BPA plans to change how it manages power on its grid. Capacity will be increased from 560 megawatts to 1,145 megawatts.
