Solid Industrial Base Lays Foundation for Diversified Economy in SB County

San Bernardino County is a land of opportunity, but it must find ways to diversify its economy beyond its strong industrial base and attract more young professionals to the region. Those sentiments were among the strongest voiced at last week’s State of the County event at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

The annual gathering is the county’s largest business networking event, with more than 1,000 attendees. It is an opportunity for business, government, and community leaders to share ideas and work together in business.

A video report by the county found that industrial production is on the rise, the cost of housing is 47 percent less than in LA, the small business sector is growing, and locally-controlled LA/Ontario International Airport is expected to play a key role driving the West Valley’s future economic growth and prosperity.

Key CRE takeaways included:

  • “The county needs more town houses and condominiums, and not just warehouse jobs, if it wants to attract younger, working professionals.” Randall Lewis, Lewis Group of Companies
  • “The warehousing jobs are good jobs. Our basic theme is quality of life starts with a job. These are good jobs, and you can grow from there.” Kirk Johnson, Watson Land Co.
  • Johnson also noted that high developer fees and lack of infrastructure are hindering the county’s economic growth.
