Solar Showdown in Texas
As has been written before, Texas energy is more than oil and gas. The state also has a thriving wind industry. Solar power in Texas is also on the rise. Environment Texas Research & Policy Centers’ recent report, “Shining Cities 2018,” pointed out that two Texas cities were among the top 20 when it came to total installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2017. These were San Antonio (in sixth place) and Austin (17th place).
San Antonio, in fact, was rated a “Solar Star,” representing a city with 50 or more watts of solar PV per person. “All the Solar Stars have experienced dramatic growth in solar energy and are setting the pace nationally for solar energy development,” the report said.
• Solar Stars: Cities with 50 or more watts of solar PV per person
• Solar Leaders: Cities with 25-50 watts of solar PV per person
• Solar Builders: Cities with 5-25 watts of solar PV per person
• Solar Beginners: Cities with less than 5 watts solar PV per person
