With the Department of Homeland Security actively accepting bids from developers for a border wall between the United States and Mexico, some Texas architects and designers are suggesting that bricks and mortar should give way to friendlier options between the nations.

Austin-based Levy Kohlhaas submitted ideas for a multi-purpose border park that would include everything from a farmer’s market, to soccer fields, to entertainment. Though company principal Francois Levy indicated the proposal is an attempt to voice opposition to the wall, different and innovative design concepts could “promote positive communication between countries, subverting the current authoritarian national narrative,” he wrote on Linkedin, under the hashtags “DrawTheLine and #NotOurWall.

Meanwhile, former deputy Texas Secretary of State Alfonso Casso suggested setting up solar panels along the border to protect the homeland and be “part of a “comprehensive energy policy,” he told the Texas Tribune. “Why build another Great Wall of China that’s just going to be another psychological barrier?”
