South Bronx’s Sideways Solar Panels

Want solar panels for your building, but there is no room on the roof? Urban Health Plan recently placed 104 new photovoltaic panels on the side of its Simpson Pavilion, which opened in 2014 on 1054 Simpson St. in the South Bronx. The energy-efficient building already had a green roof.

“It saves money that we can put back into services for our community,” said Paloma Izquierdo-Hernandez, president and CEO of Urban Health Plan.

Solar installer Quixotic Systems did not disclose the panel prices — though Urban Health Plan likely benefited from tax credits and rebates.

The 37-kilowatt-capacity array is expected to generate 31,986 kilowatt hours of electricity in its first year, which will offset the center’s energy use by 10%, saving an estimated $230,000 over the next 25 years.
