Smooth Sailing for SD Convention Center Pavilion after $25.5M Loan
California state officials approved a $25.5-million loan to repair the rooftop of the San Diego Convention Center, including the sails pavilion, later this year. It is the largest loan authorized by California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank since it started handling funds for the state in 2000.
The “historic” investment initiates upgrades at one of the region’s key economic drivers. For years, the Convention Center Corp. struggled to secure funds to cover costs for deferred maintenance.
Among the top repair priorities is replacing torn fabric, deteriorating fasteners and cables on the 27-year-old sails pavilion. Other work includes replacing the pavilion’s concrete floor, as well as installation of new cooling towers, modernized escalators and replacement of one of the building’s fire alarm systems.
