Skender Unveils Prototype of Modular Apartment

Skender has unveiled a modular smart-apartment prototype in the manufacturing facility it opened earlier this year on the city’s southwest side. The prototype is an early version of the apartment units that will be built in Skender’s factory for a building in the West Loop early next year.

“We believe that modular manufacturing will make the increasingly expensive construction process more affordable for developers and their tenants,” said Tim Swanson, Skender’s chief design officer.

The modular manufacturing method is expected to reduce the timeline of traditional building by up to 50%, and cut costs by about 15%.

“We have already uncovered several manufacturing efficiencies through the creation of this prototype, including the ability to install smart apartment tech at a fraction of the cost it would normally take to install in an already-existing unit,” said Pete Murray, president, manufacturing at Skender.
