Skender to Open Modular Building Facility on SW Side

Skender has leased 105,560 square feet for a modular production facility on the city’s southwest side and has hired Peter Murray as president of its new platform, Skender Manufacturing. Production is scheduled to start as early as this coming November for Skender Manufacturing’s first project: a six-story, 110-unit, 80,000-square-foot multifamily building to be located in the West Loop.

“I’m a huge believer in advanced manufacturing, and I’ve seen its potential for the building industry,” said Murray. “There’s no reason we can’t apply the principles of advanced product design to buildings.”

The West Loop property’s 110 apartment modules will be loaded onto a one-story steel podium, a process that’s expected to begin in February 2019 and take about eight weeks. The property is expected to be substantially complete by next July, for a construction timeline that’s about 30% to 40% faster and at 10% to 20% lower cost than the norm.
