Skanska Completes First Phase of East River Greenway Project

Skanska has closed the initial phase of the East Midtown Waterfront Esplanade and East River Greenway development in Manhattan, marking a step toward the 22-block-long Manhattan Waterfront Greenway.

The project’s first stage includes an in-water structure, a nine-block park, and eco-tech measures like GPS-tracked construction barges, timelapse cameras, and underwater drones for inspections. Sustainability efforts incorporated engineered soil within Silva Cells for stormwater management, geo-zone safety alerts, and proactive initiatives fostering a 31% participation of MWBE (Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises) against a 17% goal.

Spearheaded by Skanska in collaboration with the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the initiative looks to accentuate the city’s coastline resilience to climate change while providing spaces for residents and visitors.
