Skanska Awarded $303M Contract for Replacement Lowell Bridge

Skanska has been awarded a contract by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to carry out the $303-million design-build of a new, relocated Rourke Bridge carrying Wood Street over the Merrimack River in Lowell, MA. Completion is expected by spring 2030.

The project consists of a new seven-span bridge, intersection reconstruction at both ends, bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, stormwater infrastructure improvements, highway lighting, landscaping and utility relocations. The existing bridge will remain open for use until the completion of the new structure.

“The reconstruction of the new Rourke Bridge will further support the planned growth in this region to accommodate future traffic demand and will improve the overall safety and operational efficiency at this crossing of the Merrimack River,” said Paul Pedini, SVP at Skanska USA Civil. “Skanska looks forward to helping design and build another essential piece of infrastructure that will enhance the transportation experience of the local community.”
