Site Work to Launch on Austin State Hospital in Fall ‘19

The Texas Legislature has set aside $165 million to fund the first of two phases that will replace the old and dilapidated Austin State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital on Guadalupe Street. The monies will cover demolition of some of the buildings on the campus, and  support construction of a new hospital shell. The next round of funding, which will require an additional $120 million, will cover the hospital’s completion.

Crews will not demolish the historic hospital building, which currently serves as an administrative building. Upon completion, the 375,000-square-foot building will add approximately 30 more beds and offer more single-occupancy rooms.

The site work that begins in the fall will involve preparing the land for construction, which is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2020. The hospital target date opening is summer 2023. The 299-bed hospital is the oldest psychiatric facility in the state of Texas.
