Short-Term Rental Restrictions Eased in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a softer version of the Rent Stabilization Ordinance that went into effect in July, though enforcement of the ordinance was held off until this month. The latest proposal that was passed by the council 14-0 this week will allow rental owners to rent out a unit for short stays, provided they own and occupy the unit.

The city must draft up a new ordinance for council approval on the recommended short-term stay component of what had been a broader and more restrictive ordinance. The revised rules would allow units in rent stabilized properties to be rented out for short stays too, though the own/occupy rule still applies.

The council indicated the change to allow short-term rentals will help people rent out their own homes for short stays using such platforms as Airbnb and VRBO, yet there’s still protections to ensure entire apartment buildings aren’t taken over by travelers.
