Shapack Partners plans apartments on the site of a fomer Salvation Army facility at 509 Union Ave. in Chicago

Shapack Plan for Apartments, Hotel Near Chicago Casino Wins City Council Approval

Shapack Partners’ plans to build hundreds of apartments and a hotel near the planned Chicago casino were approved by the City Council on Wednesday, reported Crain’s Chicago Business. The developer’s rezoning proposal cleared the Chicago Plan Commission and the council’s Zoning Committee earlier this month.

Shapack plans to transform a site along Grand Avenue, currently home to a shuttered Salvation Army facility, into apartments and a 141-key hotel. Separately, the developer plans to redevelop a trio of sites southwest of the Salvation Army property with more apartments. In all, Shapack intends to develop about 1,400 apartments, down from 2,200 in the original zoning applications.

The collection of projects amounts to one of the most ambitious bets on a resurgent downtown apartment market, Crain’s reported. It also piles onto a mix of huge apartment projects near the proposed $1.7-billion Bally’s casino, hotel and entertainment venue.
