Sensing the company was chasing a losing proposition, Las Vegas Sands Corp. dropped its request to build a casino and destination resort at the old Texas Stadium site in Irving. The Dallas Business Journal reports over 175 citizens attended the Irving City Council meeting to express their views, most were in opposition to the resort/casino.

However, the company has not abandoned the site; it is just looking to explore other development opportunities. For example, the company can build a 15,000-seat arena, one that would be large enough to accommodate the Dallas Mavericks NBA team, which they own. The team is considering leaving its current arena once the lease is up in 2031.

If the motion was approved, Sands would have invested $4 billion for a 4 million-square-foot development. The project was estimated to create upward of 9,000 jobs and generate more than $85 million of tax revenue for the region, including $25 million for the City of Irving.
