Seniors are NY State’s Fastest-Growing Demographic, Says CUF

Statewide, the population aged 65 and older increased 26% between 2007 and 2017 and represents the Empire State’s fastest-growing demographic, the Center for an Urban Future (CUF) reported. Although some upstate counties have far exceeded the statewide average for senior population growth, New York City is hardly an outlier: Brooklyn’s home to a greater number of older adults than any other county in the state.

That’s a trend with broad implications for public policy, says CUF. To meet the needs of the state’s booming older adult population, Governor Cuomo and the legislature “will need to make investing in older adult services a top priority statewide,” according to CUF.

At the same time, CUF says local and county officials should do more “to plan for the aging of their populations and make sure new programs and policies are in place to ensure older adults can thrive across multiple generations.”
