Second Chance for Matera Paper Building
Matera Gardens LLC and the City of Abilene (TX) are teaming up to redevelop the Matera Paper Building in the city’s downtown SoDA District. The plan is to redevelop the .7-acre property on 101 Oak St. as a combination brewery and event center.
The facility, which was built in 1907, burned down in 2012, and has been in a state of disrepair since that time. Tim Smith, who leads Matera Gardens LLC, acquired the asset in late 2017. Local media reports noted that planning for the new structure, and getting the appropriate permits, took about a year. The city council recently approved a direct economic incentive of $78,000 for the build.
The two-year-old Sockdolager Brewing Co. will move into the structure by summer 2020.
