Second Avenue Subway too Expensive
New York City could get a lot more subway for the $6 Billion it now plans to spend on the next phase of the Second Avenue Subway. Around the world, other countries build for less.
“At Parisian prices, the $6 billion the Metropolitan Transit Authority is currently seeking for phase two would be enough money to build 15 miles’ worth of subway,” said Matthew Yglesias, for Vox.com
The $6 billion cost of phase two works out to $2.2 billion per kilometer. That will make it the most expensive subway project in the world, in its cost per-kilometer to build, narrowly surpassing phase one of the Second Avenue Subway, which clocked in at “only” $1.7 billion per kilometer.
