Seattle’s New $300M Amtrak Maintenance Facility Reaches Milestone

Amtrak has reached the halfway mark of constructing its new maintenance and inspection facility in Seattle.

The facility, located in the King Street Yard, will help support maintenance of the new Airo fleet that will debut on the Amtrak Cascades later this year. The $300 million project in the city’s SODO neighborhood is more than half complete, with the new Airo fleet set to launch on the Cascades route, which serves the Pacific Northwest corridor.

Located just south of Amtrak’s existing SoDo trainyard, the new warehouse includes two maintenance bays, one service and cleaning bay, and a new parking deck. Last month, the company announced it was streamlining onboard staffing on the Empire Builder route, which connects Seattle to Chicago.

Amtrak is building a network of new and upgraded maintenance facilities across the country, including the Seattle location, to allow full trainsets to be inspected and serviced together.
