Seattle’s 58-story Rainier Square MXU Tower Topped Off
Wright Runstad & Company reached a key construction milestone on the iconic 58-story Rainier Square mixed-use tower in downtown Seattle. The development team gathered recently to place the last beam 850-feet above street level on the landmark development.
The developer signed an 80-year ground lease on the University of Washington-controlled site at Union Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. The overall 1.7-million-square-foot Rainier Square super-block site also includes an existing 540,000-square-foot Rainier Tower.
The additions include 722,000 square feet of office, 191 residential units, 79,000 square feet of retail/amenity/fitness space, as well as 163 hotel rooms. NBBJ designed the new components to complement the existing tower’s distinctive curved base.
The time required to erect the new tower was significantly reduced, using a radical shear wall core system that encompassed steel plates rather than traditional rebar and formwork between concrete elements. Construction commenced in 2017, and first occupancies are scheduled for next year.
