Seattle E-Commerce Battle Ensues as Zulily Sues Rival Amazon
Seattle online retailer Zulily, an online retailer owned by private equity firm Regent LP, has accused fellow e-commerce giant Amazon of bullying and price gouging in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
The move comes on the heels of Zulily’s recent disclosures it was closing down operations and laying off employees. In the suit, the company claims it suffered “substantial revenue losses” and says Amazon’s actions were part of a “plot against Zulily.”
Zulily has said it is laying off nearly 300 employees in Seattle and closed down the company’s headquarters. The once-popular online retailer and former unicorn startup is also shuttering warehouses in Nevada and Ohio. Earlier this year, Zulily put up its Belltown offices on the rental market, a sign of the company’s struggling finances marked by a 17 percent decline in revenue in the first quarter of 2023.
