Seattle-Area Renters Say Making July Payment Problematic

The latest Household Pulse Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau reveals that nearly one in five renters in the Seattle metro area doubt they can make a July payment. Roughly 102,000 of the 1.1 million Seattle-area adults in rented households indicated they have no confidence in their ability to make next month’s rent, and 78,000 have only slight confidence.

The Household Pulse Survey also showed an additional 28,000 renters plan to defer July’s payment. That means nearly 210,000 renters, or 18%, say their ability to pay July’s rent will be challenging. The survey encompassed renters in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.

The renters suffering the worst among the U.S.’s largest 15 metro markets are those in the Miami area, where nearly half (49%) of renters say they can’t make July’s payment. More than a third of renters in markets such as New York, Atlanta, Houston and Detroit fall into that same category. Nationally, 27% of renters say making a July payment will prove problematic.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s eviction moratorium for renters extends through Aug. 1.
