Sears, Kmart Bankruptcy Could Cost California More Than 1,200 Jobs
Sears Holdings’ bankruptcy protection filing on Oct. 14 was viewed as a last-ditch effort to save the once-proud, but struggling, retailer. The Hoffman Estates, IL-based department store giant indicated it planned to close 142 stores nationwide, including 16 in California.
Subsequent legal notices filed with the state reveal the impact on the Golden State. Worker adjustment and retraining (WARN) notices detail 1,211 layoffs planned statewide at 15 stores by year’s end.
That includes eight Sears stores closing with 727 workers notified and seven Kmarts involving 484 workers. The Sears closures, effective Dec. 31, 2018, are in Costa Mesa (125); Cerritos (120); Bakersfield (106 jobs); Modesto (86); Sacramento (85); Montebello (79); El Centro (67) and Merced (59). The Kmarts: Riverside (93); Lemoore (83); Delano (68); Visalia (64); Modesto (62); Ontario (59) and Placerville (55). A WARN filing was not done for a Sears in Santa Rosa because it was listed as a planned closure in the bankruptcy filing.
