Sears Cuts 250 Corporate Jobs; No Plans to Close HQ
Sears said it will cut 250 jobs at its corporate headquarters in Hoffman Estates, IL beginning in late October. However, the retailer’s letter to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity said it doesn’t plan to close the headquarters.
“The employment separations are expected to be permanent; however, there are no current plans to close the entire facility,” according to the letter, which was reported by various media outlets.
Crain’s Chicago Business reported that Sears has struggled to find its footing in the rapidly-changing retail space, after filing for bankruptcy protection in October 2018. Transform Holdco, controlled by former CEO Eddie Lampert, successfully bid $5.2 billion for Sears last February.
In early August, Sears said it would close 26 more stores by Oct. 31, including two Chicago-area locations: Bloomingdale, IN and Merrillville, IN. The announcement said the company “cannot rule out additional store closures in the near term.”
