Sea-Tac Airport Goes All In With Air Cargo

Pre-pandemic, a typical year at Sea-Tac airport had more leisure than business travel, with nine straight years of record-setting passenger growth to prove it. However, passenger activity at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport mirrored broader economic trends in 2020.

Specifically, domestic air cargo volume soared nearly 15%, reflecting demand for e-commerce goods, pandemic response, medical supplies and recent vaccine distribution by freighters and belly cargo. Conversely, passenger traffic dropped 61.3% to slightly more than 20 million travelers, a level not recorded at Sea-Tac since 1994.

“Certainly 2020 has been a monumental year for SEA Airport, though not in any way we imagined a year ago,” said Lance Lyttle, managing director of SEA Airport. “What looked like a year of exceptional advancements for one of the nation’s fastest-growing airports has become instead a sobering lesson in humility, agility and the power of good planning.”
