He was a star on the gridiron, now former college safety Mikial Onu is trying to make a name for himself in the equally rough-and-tumble world of real estate development. His company, Onu Ventures is soon to start construction on a 12-acre mixed-use development near the intersection of Interstate 20 and Interstate 45.

The residential phase will have 250 studio, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments. The features include a pool, jogging trail, dog park and fitness center.

The retail phase will feature 10,000 square feet of space, which will include a grocery store and cafes and restaurants.

Onu says the area is underserved, “If this city is going to reach its potential, it cannot leave South Dallas behind. With this project, we aim to start the movement to develop South Dallas into a vibrant community for young professionals and growing families.”

The project will break ground first quarter of 2023 with units ready in early 2024.
