SDSU Selects Developer for Mission Valley Affordable Community

SDSU’s Mission Valley Stadium on Slow Road

According to reporting from the San Diego Union Tribune, weeks, if not months, of work is still needed before the city of San Diego can begin the transfer of 135 acres of its Mission Valley stadium property to San Diego State University (SDSU).

Both sides characterized talks as productive, but noted that some logistical and policy issues related to in-progress transaction documents have yet to be settled. The transaction started in November 2018 with the passage of Measure G.

SDSU is offering to pay around $87.7 million for the land, reserve 10% of 4,600 proposed housing units for low-income residents, and pay for a river park on 34 acres of city land, among other considerations.

City leaders and university officials are aligned on the major deal points. Despite the legal wrangling, SDSU believes it can close the transaction and construct a new stadium in time for the 2022 college football season.
