Scottsdale Towne Center converting big box into apartments

Scottsdale Mall New Site for Multifamily Community

Withey Morris, the owners since 2017, now say that a portion of the Scottsdale Towne Square will be repurposed. The owners are converting a onetime big-box store into a 350-unit apartment. Withey Morris’ Jason Morris says the center has become dated, “We are taking a project that may have been perfect two decades ago or three decades ago, in terms of shape, size and content, and making it something that works today.”

The property, on the northwest corner of Scottsdale and Thunderbird roads, was built in 1986 as a grocery-anchored shopping center. The redevelopment plan only included the northwest portion of the property. Existing retailers on the southern portion, including a Natural Grocers, is not part of the redevelopment. Morris added that big-box stores have fallen out of favor due to the explosive growth of online retailers.
