Schools, Gyms, Bars, Sports Set to Reopen as California Moves Ahead in COVID-19 Plan

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) released guidance for additional sectors of the economy that will allow some counties to move into Phase 3 of the state’s COVID-19 reopening plan. That means gyms, bars, campgrounds, tribal casinos, professional sports and other businesses may start reopening as early as this Friday.

CDPH’s Dr. Sonia Angell, state public health officer and director, says “As we continue to release guidance on how different sections can reopen with modifications, it is important to remember guidance doesn’t mean ‘go.’ Your local health officer will make the final decision about which sectors will open, guided by data specific to your community.”

The plan outlined by the state also included specific guidelines and best practices for reopening schools this fall. The state committed to providing no-touch thermometers for all schools and childcare facilities, face shields for roughly 2.4 million teachers and childcare providers, more than 14 million cloth face coverings for students and 143,000 gallons of hand sanitizer.

Governor Gavin Newsom said on Friday the state plans to continue providing guidance to counties about how to reopen. Individual counties are responsible for determining when business operations can resume by filing attestation forms.

The CDPH reports the state’s case positivity rate is at 4.5% and the number of hospitalizations has decreased by 2.9% over the last 14 days.
