SB 902 Rekindles Legislature’s Housing Agenda
The dialogue on affordable housing in Sacramento continues, and California Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) has introduced SB 902, a new affordable housing development catalyst offering permissions for construction of duplex, triplex and fourplex residential units in single-family neighborhoods.
The number of units that could be built would depend on the size of the city, with fourplex projects aimed at cities with a population greater than 50,000. The new bill would not allow a single-family home to be demolished for a higher-density project if it had been rented out at any point over the previous seven years, a nod to the concerns of affordable housing activists.
In a statement, the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles’ (AAGLA) Daniel Yukelson said “SB 902 lifts some of the barriers to new apartment construction and would represent a small step in reversing the massive affordable housing shortage that exists across the state.”
