SB 50 Opposition Vocal as January 31 Deadline Looms

With a week until a key January 31 deadline, California’s SB 50, major legislation that aims to increase housing growth in the state, is facing new opposition.  State Sen. Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) and a coalition of groups representing low-income communities now oppose the bill.

At the same time, supporters of SB 50 added additional organizations as endorsers: United Ways of California, the Coalition for Clean Air, and the United Farm Workers of America. Industry leaders like the CA Apartment Association and CA Association of Realtors are already on board.

This, all at the time the bill faces a January 31 procedural deadline for a floor vote to continue forward to the assembly. Last week, State Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) reached into the Senate Appropriations Committee and moved the bill into the Rules Committee, which she chairs, for movement to the Senate floor.

If the bill passes the Senate, which now seems likely, it can still be fought over in the Assembly.
