SB 50 January 2020 Updates on Version 2.0
The move from the State Senate’s Appropriations to Rules committee puts SB 50 on track for a floor vote this month, a sign that common ground is on the horizon for the various political forces shaping the dialogue on adoption of the measure to spur residential development statewide.
1. SB 50 must come to a floor vote before the end of January or be tabled until 2021. If approved, it will move to the CA Assembly for further debate and review.
2. Local control seen as a major issue for Suburban/Rural politicians and planners, where mass transit infrastructure does not provide the same support for taller, denser developments.
3. Amendments added on affordable housing for qualified local residents in communities poised to see an increase in resulting development. The issue of gentrification and displacement of low income residents is a flashpoint for contention.
4. Endorsed by CA Association of Realtors and CA Apartment Association.
