A well-known San Antonio theater owner is looking to expand the company’s mall holdings. Santikos Entertainment currently runs nearly a dozen area movie theaters and also has interests in a handful of other commercial projects. A public filing suggests the company wants to build a retail project at 6010 UTSA Blvd. that would include two buildings totaling 21,300 square feet.

Santikos Real Estate Services, the real estate arm of Santikos Entertainment, has submitted plans to build a $50 million shopping mall in northwest San Antonio. The location is just east of the UTSA campus.

Construction is scheduled to begin in May and last through November.

The company was founded in 1911 by entrepreneur Louis Santikos, a recent arrival from Greece, and was owned and operated by his son, John Santikos, until his death in 2014. The Santikos’ first theater opened in 1923.
