Santa Monica Airport Closing

The FAA and city of Santa Monica reached an agreement that will ultimately result in the closure of Santa Monica Airport in 2028. Additionally, the runway will be immediately shortened to 3,500 feet, which will substantially reduce jet traffic and charter operations.

The city has been battling for decades to close the general aviation airport popular with celebrities and corporate executives. The agreement concludes years of litigation, and will bring local control to the 227-acre site.

Santa Monica proposes to replace the airport complex with a park, recreational facilities as well as non-aviation uses. Pilots, aircraft owners and aviation supporters were dismayed at the decision, noting that the airport is a key part of the national airspace system.

The airport is home to 270 aircraft, and averages roughly 250 takeoffs and landings per day.
