Sanford May Land First Target Store

Casto plans to redevelop the Riverbirch Shopping Center, and a Target store, 62,000 square feet of retail space and a grocery store will be included in the mix. The Triangle Business Journal reports that the Sanford City Council is scheduled to discuss providing $4 million worth of incentives to the project, which Casto says will cost about $64 million.

Target could open as soon as 2027.

In November 2022, Casto purchased the 35-acre shopping center for $10 million.

Target is adding stores to the region by focusing on once small, rural communities that are now growing fast. Target opened its first store in Moore County (Southern Pines) last year and plans to open its first Johnston County store next year in Selma.

Casto recently received approval from the Clayton Town Council for a $100 million shopping center and residential project that could attract the town’s first Target store.
